"Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent!"

The mirror test is an experiment developed in 1970 by psychologist Gordon Gallup Jr. to determine whether an animal possesses the ability to recognize itself in a mirror. It is the primary indicator of self-awareness in non-human animals and marks entrance to the mirror stage by human children in developmental psychology. Animals that pass the mirror test are: Humans older than 18 mo, Chimpanzees, Bonobos, Orangutans, Gorillas, Bottlenose Dolphins, Orcas (Killer Whales), Elephants, and European Magpies. Others showing signs of self-awareness are Pigs, some Gibbons, Rhesus Macaques, Capuchin Monkeys, some Corvids (Crows & Ravens) and Pigeons w/training. (Sorry Kitty!)

Admiralty Island in Southeast Alaska supports the largest concentration of brown bears anywhere in the world. Sustained by a wealth of salmon streams, isolated and protected by their environment, some 1,800 Alaskan brown bears are part of a unique circle of life that has played out there for centuries. Beginning in August, thousands of salmon return to the island to spawn, providing a fest for the bears, eagles, gulls, sea lions, and even the trees themselves. Fishing may take place at the streams, but the fish themselves are often taken into the forest to be eaten, and the remains from thousands of unfinished meals provide more than half of the nutrients that fertilize the forest floor. As long as the salmon continue to arrive, all is well. But this year, there's a little change in the weather. Water temperatures are a few degrees colder than normal. The salmon fail to arrive for the first time in recorded history, and the bears get a bitter taste of what the future may hold. We follow the struggle of one young mother attempting to raise three little cubs. Her story holds both tragedy and triumph as her world goes from feast to famine.
